Letterboxing and a midnight race

From: Chris Holm (cholm@dcn.davis.ca.us) | Date: 2004-06-20 21:25:41 UTC-07:00
I was trying to think of something that included letterboxing that would be
a one night excursion for anyone that might want a little more excitement to
a hunt.

The idea is to put a news release in my local newspaper about a Letterbox
hunt with a special twist (they recently did an article). This one will
start after midnight on a certain day (I would not post the clues on the
Letterboxing.com website until midnight) the first one to locate the box
will receive $50.00 which will be stashed in the box.

First I think it would be great to look for clues in the dark! I would make
sure it is safe and lawful but still exciting.

Curious to know what others think? I am open to suggestions, I have other
ideas but I thought I would start with this one. I am also coming from
trying to find something my teenage son and friends would get excited about
and I would send a adult to oversee their hunt.

Any thoughts??

Would you give a kind, unemployed person such as myself a five minute
head start? =)

> I am open to suggestions

Sounds like fun to me. =) Liability concerns, perhaps, but if it's
all legal and legit, why not? I love hiking in the dark sometimes.
(Preferably when the moon is full and I can get around without using
a flashlight--really experience the night that way!)

> trying to find something my teenage son and friends would get

I have good news about your teenage son and friends! I study has
recently been released showing that there IS a cure for such a
condition. It's called Time. The bad news, however, is that it
seems the demand for Time was way under-estimated, so Time is in very
short supply. There are devices reportedly out there that allows you
to 'save Time', but how can you save something you don't have in the
first place? But fear not, the teenage condition is, allegedly,
temporary in nature, regardless of whether or not you manage to
acquire any Time.

Well, since we live in your town, we're all for it! Hopefully it will be
planned for a weekend night and, as Ryan suggests, a full moon would be
helpful--on or about July 2nd or 31st (we prefer the latter as we'll be out of town on
the 2nd!)

Are you sure you want to publicize it in the "Enterprise" though? Could bring
out all kinds of weirdness.

Great the fun would be knowing you are not the only one involved in the
race.

I thought I would hide the letter box somewhere in the city no need to worry
about creepy crawlies. It might even be hid some where you need to be
discrete or you might be noticed. The part about the darkness is the late
night hour and in some places you would need to travel where it maybe become
dark with only spaced out street lights to guide your travels but I would
want it to be a safe hunt but not to be done alone given the fact you never
know who you might meet out at that late night hour.

I'd say, just post it to the Lb list at a time you've designated and have
told us all about. Maybe give 5 days notice to get us all worked up about it,
then we'll all be holding our breath at midnight when you post it. (this 5 day
notice will give us old farts a chance to catch up on our sleep and take a nap
that day too!)

How many Letterboxers do you think it would attract to this area??

Good question!! I think there are about a dozen letterboxers within ear shot
but the 'after midnight' thing will leave many out. Honestly, I think your
'teenagers' and us and maybe the Jiggs family if you only post on this site. If
you put it in the paper, who knows how many UCD frat boys will show up.

I think it would be more fun if we had more competition it adds the the
excitement. Lets think about it, I am working on the clues now. I think it
would be interesting to see how many more potential letterboxers we can
interest. Another plan is you and I and the Jiggs family can invite our
own friends in. I think it would be best done in teams. Strategy will be
the key!

Well done clues and strategy is what this is all about! That and checking and
double checking the clues to see if they work before the race commences. (Did
you see Jigg's posting about not finding your box at the Explore It! Center
for the second time?) We don't want to end up with a bunch of totally
frustrated people in the middle of the night.

When did they search for the box ? I was repairing the box this past week
because the outer covering was a mess. I just replaced it this past Sunday
evening. Did you think that box was it hard?

Chris:

Yes, that box was difficult! With a million rocks to look under we had a
tough time. We almost gave up until we figured out the French Bread was the rock.
Still, Jiggs knew that, even after I helped him with the clues after his first
try but he still didn't get it. He was looking for the 2nd time last weekend.

You might want to reconsider where it is placed as it was first in a drainage
area that would get it flooded all the time. Also, those heavy rocks tend to
mutilate those 'throw-away' boxes. It needs to be on higher ground within that
rock area.

Ask Jiggs to try again emphasizing between a big one near a Emu egg and
French Bread looking rocks. He must of came when I had it at my house.

I think I have had around 9 visitors so far with only one saying they almost
gave up. The rock part is the hardest but if you think about the clues even
then I said between a big one and French bread that should have helped.
About where it is located I may move it when the rain becomes a threat but
even with the rain last season it stayed dry.

Wait a minute...you mean you REMOVED the box? I guess finding the

Has the box been replaced yet? (still need to find F200)

Re: [LbNA] Letterboxing and a midnight race
